Saw this again tonight after watching it a few hundred times a couple of years ago.
This time next week I'll be watching My Morning Jacket at White River State Park in downtown Indianapolis. What's more awesome is that I'll also be watching Nate Groves watch My Morning Jacket as he attends his first concert*. This makes me the most excited I've ever been about a show. I'll try to get some decent pre- and post-facemelt pictures.
*Of course his attendance at the concert is still not guaranteed, pending the completion of the Manatee County English Pre-AP Summer Reading Project.
I'm sure a good time will be had by all. This will be my fourth My Morning Jacket show, and hopefully the first time I get to hear "Steam Engine" in person.
I'd also like to add that having a member of your favorite band comp you tickets to a show is the bee's freakin' knees.
True Story:
This morning, right before I woke up, I dreamed that I was talking to Jimi Hendrix. The conversation went like this:
Me: Wow, it's so awesome that you're here. Can you play "The Wind Cries Mary" for me?
Jimi: No, I can't play that song anymore.
Me: Why not? Is it because you think it's played out...because John Mayer covered it and it was in one of the Guitar Hero games?
Jimi: No. I can't play it anymore because I'm dead.
This was probably my favorite dream ever.
I'm afraid I did the late, great Jeff Buckley a disservice a couple of months ago when I posted that he looked like Ziggy from The Wire. I stand by my opinion regarding the similarity, but I felt that the Screamin' Jay Hawkins cover (Alligator Wine) is amusing but not the best representation of one of my favorite artists ever. So I wanted to make amends. Trouble is, Buckley passed in 1997, and while there are a handful of videos on YouTube, most are poor quality clips of live shows or very dated, moody music videos that feature mostly scenes of busy city streets. The following is one of the former.
Grace is one of the best albums ever. If you don't own it, you should.
"I told her I'd never fall in love. But now I know better..."
It was the fall of 1988...I was a junior in high school when I put out fifteen dollars(!) for a ticket to see New Edition, Al B. Sure, and Bobby Brown at Louisville Gardens. The N.E. Heartbreak tour. This was not the original New Edition lineup. Bobby Brown was a solo act by this time, and Johnny Gill had taken his spot. This was the "almost all-grown-up" New Edition, produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. This was the New Edition that existed between "Mr. Telephone Man" and Bell Biv Devoe (and Ralph Tresvant's solo, um, career).
I try to poke fun at this, but I can't. Because I remember just how much I loved me some New Edition when I was 16. Of course, I also loved me some acid washed jeans and converse sneakers. And I-O-U Sweatshirts. And I definitely had a haircut that bordered on a mullet.
Now that I think about it, I'm quite positive this tape was in my Pinto's cassette player during the drive-in movie fiasco I described in a previous blog post. I remember because it started raining while the movie was on and I fast forwarded to "Can You Stand The Rain?" I was a smooth operator back in the day, for realz.
*Really Important Double Bonus Blog Post*
If you leave the video rolling but scroll down to read other entries below, you can watch Ron Swanson dancing instead of Ronnie, Johnny, Ricky, Mike, and Ralph. It's worth doing, I swear.
My Morning Jacket were on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon last night. If you saw the show, you caught their performance of Circuital, but the show also released this video as a web exclusive. I think this is becoming my favorite song on the new record.
Also, the full 90 minute version of their VH1 Storytellers episode will air this Saturday night at 9pm on Palladia. And they are set to appear on Conan on June 23rd. And of course this week they will be melting faces at Bonnaroo. Huzzah!
